Abstract | The aim of thesis entitled “The Killing and Ethical Problems in Buddhist Philosophy” is to analyse the concepts of morality, evil, righteousness, fitness and unifness of the killing. I have studied these problems by consulting the main sources such as Tipitaka, Atthakatha (Commentaries) and Tika (Sub-commentaries) by which I got the suggestions in answering these questions. The methodology is as follows :- 1. I defined what is meaning of life according to Buddhist philosophy and some philosophers. 2. Considered their views by which reasons the life can be valued. 3. I investigated the ideas of morality and ethics in committing the killing either human life or animal’s life. 4. I differentiated ill-effects which will result to those who killed a righteous person or an immoral 5. I discussed the way out from the dilemma in the case of abortion to save moter’s life if an abortion is being regarded as wrong. I studied these concepts by the way of chapterisations which are divided into the main 7 chapters. The followings are the brief outlines of each chapters which I have studied. The first chapter is an introduction about the structure of research’s project. In the second chapter, I have defined the meaning the meaning of lives, process of lives and valuation of lives. In the third chapter, it is a justification about the killing by its factors and its kinds. In the fourth chapter, it is a valuation of lives which causes the problems of killing. In the fifth chapter, the ethical or moral laws have been concerned in the killing. In the sixth chapter, I studied the ethical problems about the killing in the present society. Lastly, in the seventh chapter, it is the conclusion, criticism and suggestion those problems justified and solved by the moral laws. I have offered the reasonable suggestions and pointed out the interesting matters which are going to be further researched. The sin or ill-effect will result to the performer in accordance with these two causes, i.e., the inner cause and the external cause. The followings are two causes given considered from the subject’s aspect and from the object’s aspect. 1. Considering from subject’s aspect, the intentionality or will of the performer is the inner cause. The judgement of the more or less sinful action must be depended on the mental intention, that is it is the killing which has been done by the strong intention rooted by immoral consciousness. Therefore, the mental intention plays an important role and it is the main judgement is the above mentioned cases. 2. Considering from object’s aspect. The judgement, here, we weighed and considered from many conditions such as the more or less values applied to the killed one or the quality and the benefits of lives are regarded as the standard to be judged in the destruction of life. If we kill the more valued or beneficent life, the ill-effects or the sin will be more to the killers than killing one who is less in values and benefit. |
