Abstract  智顗著述累牘,常就正因、了因、因緣此三因佛性,來建構與鋪展佛性論。或基於圓教圓說、因材施教等諸多考良,智顗長併體、相、因、果等多重層次來予以申論。不知情者恐順此簡易解讀為:智顗的正因佛性指「實相」;了因佛性指「般若」;緣因佛性指「功德」。此般理解,雖為悖離智顗學說,卻容易忽略智顗三因佛性的根本意涵,進而模糊智顗佛性論的核心問題與思想進路。職是之故,本文擬返本探源智顗三因佛性論;此非考溯智顗前人三因佛性的可能足跡,而是重在考察智顗種子義的三因佛性,亦即考察成佛之所以可能的性質;此外,並探究智顗利三因佛性之由暨其相關問題。
  初步成果為:智顗佛性論著重關注於,眾生中的「人」如何成「佛」。由於與佛性異名同體的心,基於主體性與自由意志,而具有可惡可善、可迷可悟、可染可淨的能力,並具有頑強與脆弱的特質,因此眾生常因無明闇覆而不肯自我開發佛性。職是之故,智顗根據心與佛性的性質類別,施設三因佛性。眾生未覺、未修習前,三因佛性冥然潛存;究竟證覺時,則非道轉為佛道,圓滿顯發。其中,正因佛性可謂佛體;緣因、了因佛性的方便修習,乃互相資導,以開顯正因佛性;三者即一即三,一起一切起。因而當觀解透徹、修行圓滿,行者固然究竟無得,三因佛性異步因此增損,不過還其本來面目。
