Among the modern writers who studied Buddhism during May 4th period, a group of radical intellectuals, such as Chen Duxiu, Guo Moruo and Qu Qiubai, resolutely held the view of substituting science for religion, opposed Buddhist thought of emptiness, and gradually went towards Maxist Scientific Socialism. However, when they formed their believes, they excessively emphasized the insignificance of self and the importance of entity, lacked the sober realization of the essential difference between science and religion. Although they resolutely opposed religion in their reason , they were subconsciously rest ricted by their religious belief s. They at last didnpt integrate individual value and social value.
