Abstract慧遠晉成帝咸和九年(334)出生於雁門樓煩,晉安帝義熙十二年(416)或十三年(417),年八十三或八十四卒於江西廬山東林寺。他生活的年代幾與東晉王朝(317-420)相始終,一生學兼內外,標領緇素,對佛教在中國南方的傳播和佛教的中國本土化做出了巨大的貢獻。他人格高尚,不仕王侯,弘教衛道,與王權相頡頏,為僧伽爭人格,是中國佛教史、思想史、文化史上的重要人物。
