Abstract唐代佛教自玄奘三藏留學回國後,一天比一天興盛,駸駸乎有掩蓋一代學術思想之勢。因為信仰佛教的人逐漸增多,教團的勢力也隨之擴大,頗引起一般非佛教徒的嫉忌;尤其是道士,他們的本師是與唐朝皇帝同姓,在唐開國之初即已受皇家敬信,眼看著外來的佛教取得了朝野的崇奉,如何不尋隙報復。同時因為出家人多,教團的分子複雜,以玄奘三藏的高德,他的弟子中尚有因犯姦淫罪而被誅的,末流之弊更可想見了。從唐初到開成年間,所謂教下三家、教外別傳和律密、淨土諸宗,都名德輩出;復有帝王宰官的維護,所以佛教得以安穩的發展。到了武宗會昌年間就不同了。武宗於會昌五年八月,下詔天下毀滅佛教,造成中國佛教史中有名的「會昌法難」──第三次大法難。會昌法難之後六十餘年而唐亡。入了五代,天下無寧日。到周世宗顯德二年止,凡一百一十年間,大半是亂世;被毀後的佛教,元氣還未恢復,而毀佛的事──「一宗之厄」,又發生了。
