Abstract | The 62-deity maṇḍala of Saṃvara is one of the most important maṇḍalas in late tantric Buddhism. However, the position of this maṇḍala in the history of tantric Buddhism is rather problematic since it inherited a very small number of deities from preceding tantric systems and introduced many hitherto unknown deities. Attempts to identify the deities of this maṇḍala with preceding maṇḍalas and to interpret it in accordance with the norm of maṇḍala theory of late tantric Buddhism, particularly that of the Guhyasamājatantra, have already been made by several Indian interpreters. Among those, I found unique interpretations in the Āmnāyamañjarī, a commentary on the Sampuṭatantra by Abhayākaragupta. In this article, I mainly introduce three different interpretations of the Saṃvara maṇḍala by Abhaya¯karagupta found in the 18th, 27th and 34th chapters of the Āmnāyamañjarī and consider the meaning of the 62 deity maṇḍala of Saṃvara |
