Abstract西夏是黨項羌人以興慶府(今寧夏銀川市)為中心所建立的政權,其境內生活著黨項、漢、吐蕃、回鶻、契丹、女真、韃靼等多種民族。西夏建國前后,統治者大力提倡佛教,自德明開始,先后六次從中原宋朝求得大藏經,并據之用自己的民族文字——西夏文進行翻譯,現傳世的百種西夏文佛經,大部分都譯自漢文。西夏境內盡管民族眾多,但無疑應以漢族人口居多,在前期的譯經及后期的校經施經活動中,都有許多漢僧參與其中,加上中原佛教發展水平較高,故而漢傳佛教對西夏佛教的發展產生了深刻的影響。然而,史料中對西夏漢僧的記載卻遠遠少于吐蕃僧人。從黑城出土的西夏佛教文物與文獻,尤其是西夏法典《天盛改舊新定律令》等文獻的記載,結合史書的記載可以看出,漢僧在西夏社會中的地位既不如回鶻僧人,也遠遜于吐蕃僧人,更無法與西夏僧人相比。出現這種情況的原因有二,首先是由漢人在西夏境內社會地位低下這一因素決定的,其次應與西夏長期與宋朝為敵,西夏統治者對漢人僧侶懷有戒心不無關系。
