The present paper provides a preliminary study on one early Buddhist text, the Ant Hill Discourse. It comprises basically two parts. In the first one, the four Chinese translations of the scripture under scrutiny are critically edited and synoptically arranged together with the corresponding Pali sutta. The second part tries, on the one hand,to establish the relationships between the extant versions. On the other,it discusses the character of the main story,a rather surrealistic,dream-like tale narrated by a certain god. Attempts to explain it as "riddle","simile" or "metaphor" are refuted and a further inquiry into the meaning of the Pali word "adhivacana" shows that this key term can hardly be understood to mean in the given context,as has been claimed,"synonym","designation" or "metaphorical expression". It rather seems to represent the notion of "code" or "cipher". |
