Abstract | Contemporary Buddhism in Taiwan has its origins in two great traditions:1) native Buddhism as it existed in Taiwan before 1949,and 2) Buddhism from mainland China as introduced by the Kuomintang (KMT) government after its move to Taiwan in 1949. The original nature of the former was actively "In This World" (i.e.,dealing with contemporary matters in society),but owing to the formidable reforms of the Japanese colonial government during its occupation of Taiwan from 1895 to 1945 and the intensive restraints imposed by the KMT government after 1948 in Taiwan, this characteristic has presently all but disappeared and the influence it formerly held has also been lost. The latter tradition (i.e.,Buddhism introduced from mainland China by the KMT government to Taiwan after its move in 1949) at the very outset was derived from the mainstream Reformist school of Buddhism as led by Dharma-master Yin-shun. Afterwards, the Leaders from Chekiang and Kiangsu of the Conservative school of Buddhism (such as Dharma-masters Pai-sheng and Nan-t'ing from the Chinese Buddhist Society) used,in combination with the ruling KMT government, such terms as "Anti-Communist Propaganda" to attack Dharma-master Yin-shun and force him to lose his original position of leadership. As a result, the "Beyond This World" nature of the Conservative school was destined to shape Buddhism on Taiwan. Furthermore, the conservative nature of "Beyond This World" in Buddhism on Taiwan, under the weighty dual influences of the Japanese colonial and KMT governments, can be seen in the indifference to worldly matters by contemporary Taiwanese Buddhist followers (composed mainly of believers in the Pure Land Sect) and the support of the ultimately supreme ruling party, the Chinese Buddhist Society.
