Abstract | In order to give the Ch'an sect a sacred tradition and to protect its teaching against all opposition from outside, the early biographers of Bodhidharma embellished their narratives with legends which later generations took for historical facts. Comparing the various relations on Bodhidharma's life, the author shows what in these relations may be considered as history and what must be treated as legend.
