Abstract | All nations have their own poetry in which the national spirit shows itself most clearly. The Japanese Book of Poetry is the Manyoshu which for its great value has been the subject of extensive studies through many centuries down to the present day. Scholars of the Heian period worked on the reading of the poems; the Kamakura period produced great commentaries; the Tokugawa period with the beginning of the Kokugaku brought a revival of the spirit in which the Manyoshu was written.
