Abstract | The author gives an account of her research conducted on some important recent acquisitions and also reexamines some of Avery Brundage's acquisitions of the 1950s and 1960s. Among them are a number of Tibetan and Mongolian works and Sino-Tibetan bronzes. One of the earliest thangkas depicts, in a style influenced by the art of the Pala period,Vairochana clad in yellow and making the diamond-fist gesture indicating his beautific form. Of particular historical interest, because of their association with the Younghusband Expedition, are a book cover depicting Prajnaparamita, Shakyamuni and Vairochana and a ritual horn used in exorcisms. The book cover was acquired from a sale in the early 1950s of objects taken to Britain after the expedition and the horn was sent to the museum by the son of Lieutenant R.N. MacPherson who had acquired it in 1903-04. |
