AbstractA analysis of the causes of the arising of the Aum
Shinrikyo subway gassing of March, 1995. The author
disputes the analysis of causes presented by leading
Japanese academics and journalists, maintaing that the
roots of the development of the Aum sect (and other
similar cults) can be attributed in large part to the
imbalanced materialist-secularist style of education
prevalent in most modern countries, which is especially
pronounced in Japan.
