Abstract | This paper uses monastic codes and "Ch'an-lin pao-hsun" (a role model literature on ideal abbots and teachers) to recreate the prevailing ideas and ideals about educating novices and monks in the Ch'an tradition during the Sung. It outlines the procedures in their training and offers some suggestions as to how "kung-an" and "hua-t'ou" were used.
