Abstract《桂苑叢談》、《太平廣記》轉引的《史遺》王梵志傳說，是研究王梵志詩的一條基礎材料。半個多世經來，中外學者對這條材料的認識和理解存在很大分歧，由此明顯地影響到他們各自的觀點趨向。本文認為，《史遺》傳說是個流傳於當時民間的神話故事，它的主情節系附會佛經「柰女降生」故事而成，連「梵志」這名字也是對佛經原型中人物稱謂的襲取。探明了該傳說的來源，殊有助我們弄清王梵志詩在創作和傳播過程中的一些情況。
