AbstractFocuses on the complex mathematical organization of rhythmic structures in rol mo,the music of the instrumental ensemble of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Describes pieces and terminology belonging to Swayambhu Kargyud Monastery,Nepal, following the performing tradition of Nang chen Dil yag,a monastery of the Kar ma sublineage of the Dvags po branch of the bKa' brgyud method of Tibetan Buddhism. Describes the performance techniques of the ritual and musical leader/director who furnishes the structural form of a rol mo piece by playing the cymbals. Discusses the logarithmic structure of a cymbals beat brdung, which may be subdivided into structural units by fragmentation, serialization,or expansion. Observes that Tibetan music is organized by sequential rather than cyclic units of time. Analyzes the structure of some rol mo pieces, including Zla ba Yar tshes [Days of the waxing moon] and Mgon po spyan 'dren [Invitation to Mahakala].
