AbstractOutlines the history of gagaku and notes sources, the classification of bugaku dances, and gagaku costumes and masks. A chart of the current bugaku repertoire and an exhaustive glossary of Japanese terms are provided. Gagaku's early association with Buddhist ceremonial practices, which probably contributed to the music's survival through the civil wars of the 15th and 16th c.,is clarified. Most of the modern-day dance and song forms in the category of indigenous ceremonial music are reconstructions fashioned in the early 19th c.
