Traditional Chinese culture, which has remained atheist in essence but strategically polytheist in form of expression since the Spring-Autumn and the Warring Kingdoms times, has both bound and governed modern Chinese intellectuals in selection of western culture. Their acceptance of evolutionism and Marxist materialism reveals both a succession of the essentially athesit traditional culture and an incomplete rebellion against it. Just as the philosophy in the Spring-Autumn and the Warring Kingdoms times broke away from monotheism and completed the transfer from polytheism to atheism, so the acceptance of Marxist materialism broke away from polytheism and completely settled the orientation of development of traditional Chinese culture to atheism.
