AbstractJoan Halifax, is an anthropologist and Buddhist teacher. Her academic teaching credentials include faculty appointments at Columbia University, the University of Miami School of Medicine, the New School for Social Research, and the Naropa Institute. She is currently appointed to a Rockefeller Chair at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her books include The Human Encounter With Death (with Stanislav Grof ), Shamanic Voices, Shaman: The Wounded Healer, The Fruitful Darkness, and Being With Dying (forthcoming). Since 1970 Dr Halifax has worked with individuals suffering from life-threatening illnesses, and currently conducts a national teaching and training program on contemplative work with dying people. She has worked with indigenous healing systems in Southern Florida through the University of Miami School of Medicine and with indigenous peoples in Asia and the Americas around environmental and health issues. In 1979 she founded the Ojai Foundation and The Foundation School, where she lived and worked until 1990. Dr Halifax is currently president of Upaya, a Buddhist center in Santa Fe, NM, where she practices, teaches, does social and environmental work, and works with individuals suffering from catastrophic illness. She has practiced Buddhism since the late 1960s and was formally ordained in 1976 by Dae Sahn sa Nim. In 1990 she received the Lamp Transmission from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, and is a Dharmacarya in the Tiep Hien Order. Alternative Therapies interviewed Dr Halifax at the Upaya House in Santa Fe, NM.
