The Buddha was the first religious teacher to establish a missionary service to the world. He faced enormous problems to propagate his ideas, the foremost among them being the complexity of the Dhamma itself. After him the emperor Asoka raised the level of Buddhism to a world religion by working to establish the missionary skills of Buddhist monks. He also laid the guidelines for them to follow. Insisting that they must always people to whom they introduce our religion. The great success of the spread of Buddhism was due to the fact that people who wanted to learn about Buddhism invited monks to their lands. The problem is different today because Buddhist missionaries have to work in lands where other religious beliefs are firmly established and they have no support either from the political powers or the media. To overcome these problems monks must be knowledgeable in the Dhamma and skilled in its propagation using modern techniques. They must also concern themselves with the social needs of the people they work with and not waste their energies defending the superiority of the particular branch of Buddhism they belong to. A modern Buddhist missionary must be knowledgeable,skilled,non-sectarian,and active in social work, culturally sensitive, sincere, disciplined and full of integrity. There is a dire need to set up an international institution to train monks in these skills -- just as Nalanda did a thousand years ago. |
