As Zen comes West it has to jump a cultural barrier in a manner comparable to that which influenced the understanding of Buddhism when it first arrived in China. Both the materialism and the spiritual needs of Westerners are deeply imbedded in post-modern contemporary capitalism in which assumptions of competition, personal gain and achievement determine the attitudes of individuals seeking enlightenment as a form of success. Problems faced by Westerners interested in Buddhism are discussed and the attempt made to meet them in the formation of a new fellowship of Western Ch'an practitioners outlined. This paper also suggests procedures whereby Western practitioners may prepare more effectively for Ch'an practice on retreat through using group process methods of psychotherapy.
In the Eastern cultures are now deeply infected by originally Western commercial attitudes and culture these reflections may perhaps have global rather than merely regional significance. |
