| Abstract | 有別於傳統「佛學」的現代「佛教研究」或「佛教學」（Buddhist Studies）可以說是肇始自十八世紀流行於歐洲的「東方文藝復興」（Oriental Renaissance），或更確切地說，始自哈德遜（Brian Hodgson）於1837年將一批梵文抄本交給畢爾奴夫（Eugene Burnouf）之後。以歷史語言文獻學的批判方法研究佛教於焉成立，並擴及英國、德國，並於十九世紀末由南條文雄、高楠順次郎等人將此學風帶回日本，本世紀初再由日本傳入中國與台灣。戰後歐美佛教研究的重心則有轉到北美學界的趨勢。本計畫主要針對英語學界大乘佛教研究的成果進行整理評估，範圍則擇定在中觀學與瑜伽行唯識學二領域。在印度佛教史上，如七世紀的義淨（635-713）所見，大乘佛教分為中觀與瑜伽兩大系統；此二大乘學派也是西方佛教學界的研究重點。因此，本評估先此二大乘學派的研究，指出他們的研究議題所在，以及各種詮釋觀點。為了顯豁歐美學界佛教研究的特色，本評估計畫也探討其對方法論的反省，特別是近年來北美學界對佛學研究方法的討論與爭辯，十分值得作為台灣學界的借鑒。除此之外，本評估計畫也將北美地區的有關中觀學與瑜伽行唯識學研究的博士論文摘要予以彙整，作為附錄。
The goal of this project is to review the post-war English speaking scholarship on the studies on Mahayana Buddhism, particularly Madhyamika school and Yogacara school. The methodological and hermeneutical aspects are critically examined. The whole project is divided into four parts：(1) a survey of research institutes, academic associations, journals and publications in North America and Europe; (2) a review of interpretations of Madhyamika philosophy; (3) a review of interpretations and disputes in Yogacara-vijnanavadin philosophy; and (4) a review of methodological
reflections on Buddhist studies in the English-speaking circle of Buddhist studies. |
