AbstractA powerful work introducing the perfect Buddhas, how they awaken wisdom and compassion, and bring to maturity

enlightened qualities.
From the chapter "Awakening Wisdom and Compassion." The Teaching of Vimalakirti describes the root of human difficulties as

ignorance and the thirst for existence. Habituated to patterns rooted in a fundamental not-knowingness, beings act from a

dualistic discernment of self and other, solidifying faith in a separate self and perpetuating a dualistic view of all

existence. This mistaken view has given rise to a pervasive illness that poisons life with the manifold sufferings resulting

from desire, hatred, and confusion. Although the wisdom of the Bodhisattva penetrates the error of this view, the

Bodhisattva shares in the suffering of others as if they were his children. Recognizing in his own suffering the full extent

of their pain and the price they must pay for ignorance and denial, the Bodhisattva generates the wish to liberate all

beings… The Bodhisattva's vow to liberate all sentient beings sets aside the goal of personal nirvana to embrace the

liberation of all sentient beings. Only when all beings have entered into nirvana will the Bodhisattva reap the rewards of

his efforts. In purpose and in field of activity, the Bodhisattva is unique among the Buddha's spiritual sons. As The

Teaching of Vimalakirti states, "Not the domain of ordinary beings and not the domain of a saint, this is the domain of the

Bodhisattva.
