Abstract | Mysticism can be studied from the viewpoint of Epistemology through asking how mystics know of the Absolute' they experience. Three major types are highlighted,i.e.,Theism as represented by John of the Cross, Monism as revealed through the texts of Vijnanavada-Buddhism,and Shamanism as synthesized by Castaneda's Don Juan. Their similarities with regard to cognitive faculties as well as the experiences they induce may welcome certain dialogue. Yet,we hesitate to confirm that they are aiming at the same end. At least they appear to pinpoint different levels of the Transcendent Realm which may not completely coincide with one another. |
