Abstract | A discussion of Thai Buddhist sculpture of the ca. 6th to 13th centuries. It is only from the 4th century C.E. onward that clear indications exist of cultural contacts between Thailand and the Buddhist centers in India and Sri Lanka, and these continued until the 13th century and beyond. During this time, many streams of Buddhism from the Indian subcontinent reached various parts of Thailand, where numerous styles of Buddhist art evolved under the different sectarian disciplines and artistic conventions. The writer goes on to discuss the sculpture that developed in central and northern Thailand, eastern and northeastern Thailand, and peninsular Thailand. |
