Abstract | Karma (activity),designating in Indian philosophies the 'ripening fruit' (vipako) of vital forces, both biological and moral, seems to correspond to the requirement of a new categorial term in modern philosophy for a wide range of phenomena inadequately interpreted in terms of mechanical 'causality'. Bergson speaks of free action as 'ripening fruit' in its basic vitalistic meaning. Heidegger continues to extend the range of its existential significance. |
