Abstract | Suffering is a perennial experience. All religions are concerned with the alleviation of suffering; Buddhism makes it its basic tenet. Specifically in the Zen Buddhist training, this is used in a constructive way which brings about a change of heart and personality. It entails acknowledging existing suffering, finding and finally eradicating its cause. A religious attitude emerges which gives meaning and purpose. A traditional training analogy of this process is discussed. |
