AbstractBuddhist texts form the basis of Buddhist teaching, and serve as a guiding light for people who follow the path of the Buddha. Over the last two thousand years. Buddhist texts based upon Northern and Southern Buddhist traditions and subsequent traditions of China and other Asian countries have revealed the paths to removing defilement, developing inner wisdom, enlightening oneself, liberating beings, and benefiting the world for others. These texts help all beings live better lives.

In addition to the profound teaching of Buddhism, the Buddhist texts provide a historical context of the cultures they represent. Modern scholars have used Buddhist texts as a contemporary reference for the study of subjects as diverse as literature, languages, art,and history.

As Buddhism spread into China, the early Chinese Buddhists endeavoured to translate Buddhist texts into Chinese from their original Sanskrit,Prakrit, and other Central Asian languages. In translating the Buddhist text, translators applied their contemporary literature, phonology, languages, and occasionally their culture as they transformed the Indian into Chinese. In addition to being a foundation for Buddhist teaching, the Chinese Buddhist Tripitaka thus have a significant role in the studies of Chinese languages and literature.

Buddhist texts, besides serving as noble guides for people transcending from the mundane to a pure land, are a treasure to scholars of the humanities.
