Abstract | This article is an analysis of the main approaches in Christianity to problems of natural and moral suffering, contrasted to the main approaches in Hinduism and Buddhism. The distinctive themes of guilt, forgiveness, brotherhood, the sharing of suffering, and the role of suffering in social justice, are discussed,as well as the problem of theodicy. For Christianity, suffering is a mark of reality, not illusion, and the sharing of suffering rather than the transcendence of it is the ground for community. |
