Abstract智顗是中國佛教天台宗的創始者,也是中國思想史上傑出的哲學家,由他建構出恢宏的天台佛教哲學體系. 「性具善惡」是智顗佛學理論的核心命題,其與竺道生當年首倡「一闡提皆有佛性」一般,具發聾震聵的作用; 事實上,性具善惡的真正特色,在「性惡說」,這在智顗的晚年著述《觀音玄義)中體現出來,《觀音玄義》中云:「闡提斷修善盡,但性善在; 佛斷修惡盡,但性惡在」,「如來不斷性惡」等,其目的即是要通過性惡說的闡述,說明「心佛眾生,三無差別」的平等原理. 本文旨在分析智顗在完成性惡說的過程中,以中國傳統的哲學概念,結合大乘的思維方式,對其創見進行論證. 由於性惡說發揚了大乘菩薩救渡眾生的精神,將高度的哲學思辨落實至日用人生,縮短了佛教與現實社會距離,表現出中國哲學特點,故有助推進佛教的中國化.
