Abstract | This work, the title of which means "The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra, " is one of the so-called 'Three Major Works of the T'ien-t'ai School,' together with the Hok-ke-mon-gu (Ch.:Fa-hua-wen-chu; Taisho No. 1718) and Ma-ka-shi-kan (No. 79),and is usually known as the Hok-ke-gen-gi. It presents a comprehensive interpretation of the five characters comprising the Chinese title of the "Lotus Sutra" (No.12),giving at the same time a detailed exposition of the doctrines of the T'ien-t'ai School, which are based upon the thought of the "Lotus Sutra." It was thus a work of indispensable importance in the establishment of the T'ien-t'ai School in China, and serves in fact as the basic framework of the T'ien-t'ai school of thought.
It represents a record of the teachings of Chih-i as recorded by his disciple Kuan-ting (Jap.:Kanjo),and is not simply a theoretical work, but is characterized by the fact that it is grounded on Chih-i's own religious experience. |
