Abstract | This work, entitled "The Account of the Expedition to the East by the Great Master of T'ang," is a biography of Chien-chen (Jap.:Ganjin),the Chinese monk who transmitted the Buddhist monastic code to Japan during the Nara Period. It is divided into three parts.
Part 1 covers the period from Chien-chen's first contact with Buddhism until his meeting with two student-monks from Japan; Part 2 describes his six attempts to cross over to Japan; and Part 3 gives a brief account of events from after his arrival in Japan until his death.
The most important section is Part 2,which describes in detail the hardships undergone by Chien-chen and his party before they actually managed to reach Japan, and the work as a whole is an important historical document in that it gives a concrete account of one chapter in the transmission of Buddhism to Japan. |
