AbstractEnglish Abstract
What was the motive of Nichiren (日蓮,1222-1282) for writing his masterpiece, the Rissho Ankoku Lon (『立正安國論』) meaning 'the article on the Establishment of Righteousness to secure the Peace of the Nation'?

To mean 'writing' a paper concerning Buddhism, the Chinese letters such as '撰' (meaning 'to compose'),'述' ('to state'),'造' ('to create'),'記' ('to record'),'集' ('to collect'),etc. are frequently used in accordance with the motive for writing of it. As for Nichiren's works, for example,he gave his signature with the letter of 撰,namely,'本朝沙門日蓮撰' (meaning 'Written by a Japanese monk named Nichiren'),on the Kanjin Honzon Sho (『觀心本尊抄』) that explicates Nichiren's unique doctrines from the viewpoint of the idea in the section on the original Buddha in the latter half of the Lotus Sutra (法華經本門思想). On the other hand,he write his name with the letter of 述,namely,'釋子日蓮述' (meaning 'Written by Nichiren as a son of Sakyamuni Buddha') on the Senji Sho (『撰時抄』) that is the largest among the works of Nichiren.

From such a point of view,we can think about the motive for writing of the Rissho Ankoku Lon. Researching the manuscripts owned by the Honkoku-ji Temple (本圀寺) in Kyoto,we can find the letter of '勘' (meaning 'to admonish') with his name under the title of the article, namely,'抄門日蓮勘' (meaning 'Admonished by a monk Nichiren'). Similarly,in the bibliographical note on the manuscript of the Rissho Ankoku Lon owned by the Minobu-san Kuon-ji Temple (身延山久遠寺),we can find the same letter '勘' with its date, namely,'文永元年太歲庚申勘之'.

The purpose of writing of the Rissho Ankoku Lon was not to advocate the world of belief in the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren wrote this article as a private admonitory statement (勘文). The Rissho Ankoku Lon were memorialized to Tokiyori Hojo (北條時賴),the former regent of the Kamakura shogunate, through the intermediation of Yadoya Nyudo (宿屋入道) on the sixteenth of July in the first year of Bunno (文應元年,1260). Nichiren advised the government at the time with the article in order to remove coming disasters and to establish a peaceful country. Here is the motive for writing of the Rissho Ankoku Lon. If we read again the Rissho Ankoku Lon from such a point of view,we will know how Nichiren was interested in social problems in the real world. And consequently it will be clarified what was the distinctive characteristic of Nichiren in comparison with other newcomers in Buddhist movement in the Kamakura era.
