Abstract | Natya-shastra is the oldest and most authoritative of all treatises on Indian Sanskrit dramatic art. Scholars in Europe/ America, and Japan have long researched this topic. It was known in ancient China only through fragments that reached China with Buddhist scriptures. In recent years/ scholars in Beijing University have begun systematically introducing Sanskrit Drama. This paper synthesizes previous research, with these four points. (1)Myths, legends, and scholarly theories on the origins of Sanskrit drama. (2)The aesthetic theory of rasa (sentiment, aesthetic experience),based on sthayibhava(\astin^,fellings),appearing on three kinds of condition :mbhai?fl(emotional condition of enviroment),anubhava(exteimi[ indications of fellings),andvyabhicaribhdva(transitory fellings). (3)The external and internal structures of Sanskrit dramatic literature, characters, ' languages of lines, and genres. (4)Theatre,stage setting and costumes, acting skills, actors, audience, and criticism. |
