The advent of Hui-neng’s Zen is a distinctive cultural phenomenon in the middle Tang Dynasty. Its revolution of the traditional Buddhist doctrine of mind has significant philosophical background and pioneers in the southern Zen. The doctrine of mind-nature in the Sung,Ming and Qing dynasties could more or less associate with huei-neng’s Zen. This article is intended to outline huei-neng’s theory of mind and the deep-rooted structure of its tradition by analyzing the implication of “ mind” while proposing the writer’s distinctive views at the same time.
