| Abstract | 本生因緣故事是佛陀前生故事及教化因緣，在佛教中有重要地位，有助了解佛教的精神。敦煌本生因緣壁畫又以數量及兼處中原與西域而有自己的特色，名作極多。本書以本生因緣故事畫盛衰及復興為脈絡，並可見其漢化過程。
內容特點：
(1) 從佛教、歷史、文學角度，論述敦煌本生因緣故事畫在北朝及隋由盛轉衰，及在晚唐復興的過程，具見佛教漢化的情況；分析敦煌本生因緣故事畫的特點，指出它的珍貴價值。
(2) 收錄25個有趣的本生因緣故事。本生因緣故事實為印度民間故事集錦，情節曲折生動，富想像力，故事可讀性高，壁畫亦風格多變。
(3) 收入200多幅精美珍貴的敦煌本生因緣故事畫，包括著名的捨身飼虎故事畫等，並有極多局部圖像，足供欣賞。
(4) 本生因緣故事壁畫的情節有些多達20多個，本書特以情節分佈圖以助讀者解讀畫面。
