Abstract | Translated by John McRae, this volume presents the life and teachings of Hui-neng, the Sixth Patriarch of the Ch'an (Zen) tradition in China. This version of the text, which was first composed in the eighth century, is a later eleventh-century compilation containing ancillary material, including dialogues and clarifications added by the editor, the monk Te'i, an encomium by the Sung master Ch'i-sung, and epitaphs by the T'ang literati officials Liu Tsing-yuan and Liu Yu-hsi. Though historial details of the actual biography of Hui-neng (638-713) remain vague, the classic Zen teachings contained in THE PLATFORM SUTRA confirm him as an important figure in the history of Ch'an Buddhism.
