In this article the author brings forward three points: 1.There is one sentence in the pagoda inscription which deserves our attention: "[He] 'yin-hua隱化' in the twelfth year (592) of the k'ai-huang 開皇 period of the Sui Dynasty in Mt. Wan-Kung 晼公." "Yin-hua" means "dwelt in seclusion and preached sermons" and does not mean "died". 2. According to the Tsu-t'ang 祖堂集 written by a scholar in the Five Dynasties, the third patriarch died in the second year of ta-yeh 大業 (606). 3. In those days the pagoda bricks are of various forms. To our knowledge, there are only four bricks of that period extant: one collected by Tao-chai 陶齋; one unearthed in Hang Chou 杭州; two collected by Pei-shan t'ang 北山堂. Among them two bricks collected by Pei-shan t'ang are given detailed description in this article.
