| Abstract | 本書從歷史觀點與角度，環繞這幾個主題，探討佛教因果論及其中國化的過程；「往生西方」故事著作的產生、流變、與影響；佛教居士在推動淨土信仰上所扮演的重要角色；彌陀淨土信仰在知識界所引起的懷疑與爭論；傳統義學者對淨土信仰不同詮釋所表現的宗門意識等等。作者兼用佛教典籍及文史著作，融合「內典」與「外典」所見資料，舉證發微，客觀析論，提出新解，創意頗多。以最近西方佛教研究之趨勢為例，鼓吹跨學科的佛教史研究，將佛教史納入國史研究的主流，語重心長，值得深思。
