Abstract | This paper attempts to trace popular funeral custom of the seven seventh-day zhai-offerings in Dunhuang back to the Buddhist practice in the Southern-Northern Dynasties. The costs of these offerings were so exorbitant that most of the people concerned became bankrupt. Later, the hundredth-day ofering and the first-year and the third-year offerings were added; and these ten offerings were dedicated to the ten kings in the Underworld. These offerings could also be given for the purpose of propitiation for the people still living. As Buddhism flourished in the Dunhuang area during the Tang Dynasty, this funeral custom undoubtedly had been greatly influenced by it. |
