The present paper is a more detailed version of part of my presentation at the IABS conference 2011 at Dharma Drum Buddhist College, Taiwan; the first part of the same presentation appeared in Anālayo (“Mahāpajāpatīʼs”).
AbstractAbstract

In this article I study the tale that according to the canonical Vinaya accounts led to the promulgation of the rule on celibacy for Buddhist monks, using this as an example to understand the function of Vinaya narrative.
