AbstractThis book is a collection of essays that originally appeared in The Eastern Buddhist that focuses on the practice of nembutsu or “Buddha reflection” as articulated by the classical teachers of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism (Hōnen Shōnin, Ippen Shōnin, Shinran Shōnin, Rennyō Shōnin). It also describes the roots of Shin Buddhism within the wider contexts of Mahayana Buddhism, as well as the relevance of Shin Buddhist teachings and practices in the contemporary world. Written at a time when Western scholarly and popular focus was on Japanese Zen during the fist sixty years of the twentieth century, the essays gathered into this anthology laid the foundations for the scholarly study of Pure Land Buddhist tradition that is still ongoing. Anyone engaged in research on Buddhism in general and Pure Land Buddhism in particular will find the essays gathered in this volume an excellent starting point
