Abstract | The article discusses social engagement as a form of pilgrimage activity in sites along the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit including Bodhgaya in India. Topics covered include Bodhgaya as the most important pilgrimage site in the Buddhist world, how Bodhgaya's landscape was changed by transnational networks involving Buddhist pilgrims, and the increase of Buddhist operated non-government organizations (NGO). Also mentioned are the traditional forms of Buddhist expression. |
