AbstractIn reading several manuscripts from Dunhuang and Turfan in Japanese and German collections, this paper aims to contextualize these manuscripts and to establish the connection between Daoism and Christianity in the Tang dynasty. This paper first discusses the Chinese text on the recto sides of two fragments T II B 66 No. 17 and 18 from the Berlin Turfan collection and identifies them as part of chapter three of the Daoist text Scripture of the True Unity Original Limit of Great Mystery (Taixuan zhenyi benji jing, Benji jing). This paper suggests that this version of the Benji jing from Turfan area was closer to the cited version in the Imperial Readings of the Taiping Era (Taiping yulan) yet differed from the manuscript of the Benji jing from Dunhuang. Then this paper continues to examine the historical context in which these fragments were produced and circulated. It traced the Daoist development from Turfan back to Chang’an, the capital city of the Tang Empire and explored the multi-religious environment in Chang’an. This paper suggests that literati and readers in Chang’an might have been familiar with texts and their vocabulary from different religious traditions. Therefore this paper attempts to cast new light on the connection between Christianity and Daoism by analyzing Daoist terms that appeared in Chinese Christian manuscripts such as Zhixuan anle jing from Dunhuang, and some others. One of key Daoist terms was the Dao-nature 道性 which has been playing important role in both Daoist text Benji jing and Christian text
Anle jing.
