Abstract | This study is an attempt to explore the changes that took place in imagery of astrolatry in Buddhism during the Tang and Song dynasties, and examines the ebb and flow of beliefs and images in light of the differences in social structures that existed in the Tang and Song. By comparing dated documents with archaeologically- excavated objects, a detailed examination is made of the "One- syllable Buddhosnisa Cakravartin" and "Tejaprabha Buddha." The results suggest that a continuous process of "vernacularism" took place in response to the needs of there was born on Tang soil the Tejaprabha Buddha, images, and dharani, which thereafter remained in continuous circulation for a thousand years.
