Abstract | This article examines issues related to ``unethical`` religious conversion in Sri Lanka. Though many nations recognize ``religious freedom`` as a fundamental human right, in today`s pluralist world there are serious debates on religious conversion. With a brief discussion of religious conversion in the Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist tradition, this paper introduces two draft parliamentary bills of the JHU (Jathka Hela Uramaya) and the Sri Lankan government. The paper also examines the value of two published reports (Sinhala and English) of the commission appointed by the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress (ACBC) to gather data of religious conversions in Buddhist communities in order to highlight the ``unethical`` dimensions in them. |
