AbstractThe Ganhwa Seon has been recognized as the most authentic practice in the Korean Buddhists Jogye Order. It is claimed that the Ganhwa Seon creates an introspection to one`s own nature by evoking the experience of the Buddhist Enlightenment. Upon attaining the Enlightenment, the Seon Master`s legitimate seal of confirmation is granted to the disciple through administering a series of seemingly "illogical" questions. During his teaching in early 1970`s, the late Korean Seon Master Seungsahn introduced "The Four Suchness" as a useful tool to systematically analyze the Seon dialogues and evaluate the status of the practitioner within the scope of a logical framework. In this essay, Seungsahn`s unique formula is examined for its meaning and significance related to the baffling nature of the Ganhwa Seon. Further, its validity is carefully explored to assess if the Seon Buddhist Enlightenment is relevant to the Buddha`s teaching. The author contends that although the Ganhwa Seon may not directly induce the Buddha`s ultimate introspection of the Three Marks of Existence, Seungsahn`s "Four Suchness" is still valuable in advancing the practitioners toward the Great Enlightenment.
