Abstract在佛陀滅度後的五百年間,世人因『佛相不可顯現』而未曾以人形為之造像。在印度佛教藝術最初的流派中,沒有佛陀本身的形像。印度的藝術家們通過一些佛經引證了『世尊』和他的一生八相,比如:用『菩提樹及空座』代表『成佛』的場面,用『法輪』來代表『說法』的場面,但用人形來表現佛陀的情況付諸闕如。公元前3世紀,印度孔雀王朝阿育王執政,這位立志弘揚佛法的君主,向各『希腊化』國家派遣大量傳教者。他們為眾多『希腊化』國家帶去了佛法教義,而古希腊的藝術思想,特別是古希腊對人體美的執著表現及相應的雕塑技藝也由此使佛教徒和古印度的藝術家們不再滿足於以腳印、菩提、法輪、寶梯等像征圖像來再現、回想並紀念佛陀。在公元前100年左右,那些喀布爾河流域和旁遮普的希腊人佛教徒們更是毫不猶豫地把佛陀塑造成一種人形形像。自此,佛陀造像在時間上綿延了2000多年,在空間上也縱橫馳騁,離開其形成地達幾千公裡。
