Abstract關於《華嚴經》「七處八會」一辭的最古記載,是出現在劉宋求那跋摩翻譯的《優婆塞五戒威儀經》,其中說到學菩薩者犯失律儀戒法的懺罪之道,藉華嚴海會三寶為懺悔歸依境。或將「七處八會」視為佛陀一生說法生涯當中,極具代表性的一個部份。或將「七處八會」衍生為一種誦經追福的齋會儀式等等。
隨著中土佛學的進展,以及宗派的陸續創立,各家詮解《華嚴》處會,各出其妙語。三論宗的吉藏將《華嚴經》與《法華經》的說經處做對比,欲顯示兩部大乘圓教經典的教學特色,他多少反映著六世紀中土佛學的觀點。吉藏對於突顯「般若見」和「華嚴行」,自有其深刻的發揮,也從經文內在的修道結構而論處會的次第。天台宗智顗大師樸素的
以「地方場所」來解釋「處」;唐代的湛然於禪法素有心得,不但將法華會開為「二處三會」,還試圖超越《華嚴經》「七處八會」的時空性定義,轉向超時空性的義理面做詮釋。他仿天台止觀之學統,撰寫了《大方廣佛華嚴經願行觀門骨目》一卷,略撮「七處九會」為華嚴觀門脈絡。華嚴宗對此發揮更多,智儼將「七處八會」視為「階法」,含次第行布之義。法藏更突顯華嚴教法中,圓融與行布不相為礙的特質,確立華嚴教法亙古常新的終極意義。
由於「七處八會」(或九會)是個多層次交疊穿插的弘法結構,而且具備能夠因應時局,快速機動變換的靈活度。所以,根據這樣的詮釋基礎,華嚴美術從早期那種「法界人中像」、「蓮華藏世界海觀」,逐漸轉型成華嚴的處會圖,以「七處九會」圖集其大成。現存文獻中極其罕少的文字資料,與敦煌莫高窟大量的唐代華嚴經變圖,便承載著這樣一段歷史的密碼。本小文主要是整理莫高窟的華嚴經變圖,觀察它們從盛唐到晚唐的發展和變化。推測敦煌中唐時期的華嚴經變粉本,極可能來自長安雲華寺沙門嗣肇所纂集的「九會華藏圖」。
