Abstract | Du Guangting's (850-933) miracle collection "Daojiao lingyan ji" is modelled on a Buddhist apologetic genre, reversing its polemical thrust. This study examines the historical derivation and context of the work, analyzing select stories relevant to the theme of Buddho-Taoist interaction. Du's counter-apologetic constitutes an authentic record of the Taoist response to social and religious conflict between the two communities in the wake of the Huichang proscription. It also provides revealing evidence concerning the nature and extent of Taoist borrowings in the sphere of devotional practice. The work's treatment of the iconography of divine manifestations illustrates the importance of the translation of visual aspects of Buddhist cults in their Taoist assimilation. |
